Nicola Wheston
Born London, England 1953
Nicola Wheston is a figurative and landscape artist living on Salt Spring Island, B.C. She hails from a traditional background and training in painting, ie: painting the figure from life and capturing the landscape plein air. Painting what she observes has challenged her for all of her adult life.” It is a never-ending process of perception, intentions, trials and solutions,” says the artist. “My landscape painting allows me to emphasize the dynamic interplay of natural systems and express the drama of trees, plants and skies.”
She brings to landscape her sense of painting as research into form, structure and light, and the challenges of translating the three-dimensional world onto two-dimensional canvasses. She further states: “I am drawn to trees more than open expanses because trees are like figures to me. Painting the landscape is as psychologically intense as the figurative work.”
At Design by Brown – The Gallery, we are very excited to present new paintings by this extremely talented and powerful painter, each drawn from the vast experiences of her beloved Canadian landscape.
1972 to 1975 BFA, Rusking School of Drawing, Oxford, England
1977 to 1978 Nova Scotia College of Fine Art, Halifax, Nova Scotia
